Increase in Employment Tribunal claims

New government statistics show that there was a 51% increase in overall claims to Employment Tribunals in the fourth quarter of 2010 - 2011 compared to the same period last year. The new figures are up 73% on the claims submitted for the fourth quarter of 2008 - 2009.

The 76,200 claims submitted in the most recent quarter include an 80% increase in the number of multiple claims (including many resubmitted airline cases). Multiple cases occur where two or more people bring a claim - often against the same employer - in the same or very similar circumstances. The number of single claims received by the Employment Tribunals in the fourth quarter of 2010 - 2011 fell by 10%.

In the same period, the Employment Tribunals disposed of 34,800 cases - up 9% on fourth quarter of 2009 - 2010.
